Instagram has moved towards views as the headline number for content, but it shows them differently depending on the format and who is looking.
Views are Instagram's headline metric now
Instagram has made views the main measure across Reels, posts and stories in its Insights, replacing older labels like plays and impressions. That makes a reel's view count the first number many people judge it by.
Reels show counts publicly
On your profile's Reels tab, each reel carries a play icon with its view count. Visitors see those numbers before they tap anything.
Photo views stay private
Views on photo posts and carousels are visible to the owner in Insights but aren't displayed to the public, which is why this trial is aimed at reels.
Reels reach beyond followers
Instagram recommends reels in the Reels tab and Explore to people who don't follow you. A reel that already looks watched can make those new viewers more willing to stay.
Insights need a professional account
Detailed numbers — reach, watch time, where views came from — are available on creator and business accounts. Switching to a professional account is free and can be done in settings.
Stories are counted separately
A story's viewer list is its own number and disappears with the story after 24 hours. Reel views stay on the reel for as long as it's posted.

What if my reel is a Collab with another account?
A Collab reel appears on both profiles but has a single set of numbers, so views added through either link count once and show on both accounts. Send the link from whichever profile is easier for you.
Will editing the caption or cover reset my views?
No. Changing the caption, the cover image or the tagged accounts leaves the view count untouched. Only deleting the reel, or removing it from your grid, affects what visitors see.
