    Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator

Enter your follower count and the likes and comments on a typical post to get your engagement rate — the figure brands ask for first. Add what you charge per post and you'll also see the cost per engagement a sponsor would work out before replying to you. Nothing is sent anywhere; the maths runs in your browser.

    How engagement rate is calculated

    The formula
Likes plus comments, divided by followers, multiplied by 100. That is the by-followers definition, and it is the one brands and media kits normally mean.
    By followers vs by reach
The other common definition divides by reach or impressions instead of followers. Because reach is usually smaller than your follower count, it produces a much higher percentage for the same post. This is why two calculators can disagree about the same account — always say which one a number came from.
    What counts as an interaction
This calculator counts likes and comments, the two figures anyone can see. Instagram also reports saves and shares to the account owner, and including them raises the rate — a media kit that does so should say it does.
Use a typical post, not your best
A single viral post will overstate your rate for as long as it is in the sample. Averaging a handful of recent, ordinary posts gives a figure that survives contact with a brand's own analysis.
Why the rate falls as an account grows
Engagement rate has followers in the denominator, so a larger account needs proportionally more likes to hold the same percentage. Smaller accounts routinely post higher rates than big ones — that is arithmetic, not a judgement about quality.

How to calculate your Instagram engagement rate

    1. Take a recent post that performed normally — not your best and not your worst — and note its likes and comments.
    2. Enter those two figures along with your follower count. The rate updates as you type.
    3. Optionally add what you charge per post to see the cost per engagement a brand would calculate from your rate card.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a good Instagram engagement rate?
It depends on your size and niche, and we deliberately don't print a benchmark band. The published ones come from private vendor datasets that cannot be checked and that disagree with each other. Two comparisons are worth more: your own rate over the last six months, and the rate of accounts of a similar size in your niche, calculated the same way.
How do I calculate engagement rate manually?
Add the likes and comments on a post, divide by your follower count, and multiply by 100. For an account with 10,000 followers averaging 400 likes and 25 comments, that is 425 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 4.25%.
Should I divide by followers or by reach?
By followers when you're presenting a rate to a brand, since that is the convention in media kits and the number they will recalculate. By reach when you're judging how well one post did against another on your own account. They answer different questions and are not comparable.
Can I check someone else's engagement rate?
Yes, for a public account — likes, comments and follower count are all visible. Reach is not, which is why the by-followers definition is the one that works for anyone other than the account owner.
Does this work for TikTok or YouTube?
The formula is the same for any platform where you can see followers, likes and comments, so the number it produces is valid. Expectations differ by platform, though, so don't compare an Instagram rate against a TikTok one and read anything into the gap.
Does anything I type get sent to you?
No. There is no account, no login, and no request to a server — the calculation runs entirely in your browser.

Grow the account behind the rate

Engagement rate is a ratio — real followers and likes are what change it.
