Instagram Username Generator — Ideas That Follow Instagram’s Rules
FlowFame’s Instagram username generator turns a name or a word into handle ideas Instagram will accept exactly as written — up to 30 characters, with periods and underscores only where Instagram allows them — and checks the one you pick against Instagram itself. Nothing in the list is built for another app: the longer and dotted styles here are ones TikTok or Snapchat would refuse.
Instagram username rules
- Length
- Up to 30 characters. Shorter is easier to remember and to type into search, but anything up to 30 is accepted.
- Allowed characters
- Latin letters, numbers, periods (.) and underscores (_). No spaces, no hyphens, no emoji and no Arabic letters. Capitals are stored as lowercase.
- Periods
- A period cannot start or end the handle, and two cannot sit side by side — sara.design works, sara..design and sara. do not. Underscores have no such limits.
- When your name is taken
- Instagram’s own advice for a taken name is to add periods, numbers, underscores or an abbreviation — the same moves this generator makes for you.
- Changing it later
- You can change your username from Edit profile. The old one is released for anyone to claim, and links that used it stop working.
How to get an Instagram username that is still free
- Type the name you want — your own, your shop’s, or the subject of your page. Periods and underscores stay in, because on Instagram they are part of the handle.
- Give it a moment and the Instagram tile under the field shows whether that exact handle is free. Only Instagram is checked on this page.
- If it is taken, tap one of the ideas under the field. It replaces what you typed and is checked the same way.
- When one comes back available, copy it and set it in Instagram under Edit profile → Username before somebody else does.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I check if an Instagram username is taken?
- Type it in the field above. This page asks Instagram about that one handle and shows Available or Taken. Instagram shows a logged-out visitor the same page whether an account exists or not, so the check goes through a paid service that can read it — and if that service cannot answer, you get a link to the profile instead of a guess.
- Can I buy an Instagram username that is already taken?
- Instagram’s terms do not allow buying or selling usernames, and accounts traded that way can be removed or taken back by the seller. FlowFame does not sell handles and does not point you to anyone who does. The safe route is the one this page takes: find a distinctive name nobody holds yet, so it stays yours.
- Can I use Arabic letters in an Instagram username?
- No. Instagram usernames take Latin letters, numbers, periods and underscores only. Write your name the way you would spell it in English letters — noura, nourah, n.alotaibi — and keep the Arabic for your display name, which can be anything.
- What makes a good Instagram username?
- One people can type after hearing it once. Your real name or brand first, a period or underscore if that version is taken, a number only as a last resort. Avoid swapping letters for look-alike digits; it makes you harder to find in search.
- Why does this page only check Instagram?
- Because it is the Instagram page. FlowFame’s general username generator checks nine platforms at once, which is useful when you want the same handle everywhere; here the point is one quicker answer about Instagram. Links to the general generator and to the TikTok and Snapchat versions are further down.
- Why are the ideas longer than on the TikTok page?
- Instagram allows 30 characters and TikTok 24, so this page uses the extra room — a name plus a word like studio or daily, for example. Every idea is tested against Instagram’s rules before it is shown.
