Why won't it take a normal YouTube link?

Why is a youtu.be link refused?

Shorts, and the limits of this page

Vertical 9:16: 1080 × 1920 is the shape Shorts are made and served in, and what you get back.
Shorts links only: The URL must contain /shorts/. This is enforced before anything is requested.
Full-length videos: Not supported, deliberately. A /watch?v= link is a different thing with a different risk, and it is refused rather than handled.
youtu.be links: Refused, because they are ambiguous — the same short link shape is used for full videos and for Shorts.
Thumbnails: If it is the picture you want rather than the video, the thumbnail downloader gets it from a public URL with no extraction at all.
Availability: YouTube actively blocks shared downloader infrastructure, so this page can stop working with no notice. That is a property of the platform, not a fault here.
