Most guides say chats and Stories count toward a Snapstreak. Snapchat's own help centre says the opposite. Here is what Snapchat actually documents about streaks, expiry and restores — including the one free restore nobody mentions.
A Snapstreak is the fire emoji beside a friend's name. The number next to it counts the days the two of you have kept a daily exchange going.
That much everyone agrees on. Almost everything after it is disputed.
Read the top results for this topic and you will be told that text chats keep a streak alive. You will be told that Stories count. You will be told there is a support form that restores lost streaks for free, as often as you like.
Snapchat's own help centre contradicts all three. This guide sets out what Snapchat actually publishes, quoted from its support pages, and flags the places where it publishes nothing at all.
Snapchat's rule is short. To keep a streak going, each of you needs to send a photo or video Snap in the chat every day.
Two words in that sentence do the work. Each means it is not enough for one person to send. Snap means a photo or video, sent in the chat.
Snapchat is most explicit about this in its guidance for group streaks. There it says most members of the group must send a photo or video Snap each day. Then it adds a parenthesis: not a chat.
That parenthesis settles the whole disagreement, and it comes from the platform itself.

The number beside the fire emoji is widely misread as a score or a target. It is neither.
Snapchat states that the number is the count of days since the streak began. Its own example is a 3 beside the fire, meaning the streak started three days ago.
The hourglass emoji is the warning. When it appears next to a chat, the streak is about to expire, and the fix is to exchange a Snap as soon as you can.
Snapchat's wording on expiry is plain. A streak ends when more than a day passes without a new Snap from each person in the chat.
Note what is absent here. Snapchat does not publish a clock time, a time zone, or a grace period. It does not publish a minimum number of days before a streak begins either, only that the number equals days elapsed since it started.
Every article that gives you a precise deadline is reconstructing one. The hourglass is the only warning Snapchat commits to.
A lost streak can sometimes be restored. Snapchat's answer is yes, but only for a limited period.
The check is visual. Look for a Restore button beside the chat that had the streak. If it is there, you can restore. If it is not, Snapchat says the streak expired too long ago to be recovered, and there is no appeal to that.

On 5 September 2026 we pulled Google's mobile results for Saudi Arabia, in Arabic, for the two biggest streak queries: ستريك سناب and استعادة ستريك سناب. We then read every ranking page and compared each claim against Snapchat's help centre.
For the first query, page one held five organic results. One was Snapchat's help centre home page, one was a Facebook post, and three were independent articles. Page two added two YouTube videos, a TikTok clip, a Snapchat Spotlight video and four more small sites.
Three claims recur across those pages, and all three conflict with Snapchat's own documentation.
First, that chats and Stories count. Several ranking pages list text messages alongside photos and videos. One major news site describes a streak as an exchange of Stories. But Snapchat's rule names photo and video Snaps in the chat, and rules a chat message out explicitly.
Second, that a support form restores streaks for free, repeatedly. This was the single most common claim we found. Ranking articles and videos alike walk readers through a support form, and several promise recovery without paying anything. Snapchat's published position is different. One free restore per account, then payment, plus one a month for Snapchat+ subscribers.
Third, that there is a fixed restore price. Snapchat says the cost varies by country and is shown on your device. So there is no universal figure anyone can publish.
Worth being straight about this: a Snapstreak is a private habit between two friends. It is not a reach signal, and Snapchat has never described it as one.
Nothing Snapchat publishes connects streak length to how your Stories are distributed or to how many people see your content. If your goal is audience rather than friendship, streaks are the wrong lever to pull. Story distribution is the one that matters there, and Snapchat story views and story likes act on it directly.
